William Borden made headlines in the early 20th century for giving his entire fortune away, the equivilent of 40 million dollars in todays money.
Half to the work of God in the US, and half to overseas missions. Was it worth it to give it all away?

It was asked of Job’s motivation; did He serve God because of what he got out of out for himself?

Most people see wealth as a sign of blessing, but Christ saw things very differently..

The rich young ruler went away sorrowful after his conversation with Jesus because he was owned by his riches. After this, Peter said he has
given all away to follow Christ, and he wanted to know what was in it for him.

Christ did not rebuke Peter for asking but said in vs 30 whoever has forsaken things or people for Him would receive a hundredfold and eternal life.
Everything we give up for God will be blessed out of proportion.

When people say look out for number one, we know who that is. There is a number of variations
on this; you need to look after yourself. The humanist would say there is nothing higher or more dignified than humans.

This is a parable for those who trust in themselves, and look down on others. We tend to think of the Pharasees today as hypocrites,
but in the first century Judaism they were well respected; but their religious views were directly opposed to the grace of God.

In chapter 1, people were astonished because Jesus taught as one who had authority.

In this chapter, people were astonished at his mighty miracles; where did He get this power.

Their limited knowledge of Jesus hindered them from trusting in Him. They saw his wisdom and mighty works, but said
isn’t this just the carpenter, son of Mary?

Some people thought that Jesus was Elijah or one of the prophets; but Herod who had put John the Baptist to death, thought that
Jesus was John the Baptist come back from the dead.

Unforgiveness causes the person to be in a prison of their own making.

CS Lewis said ‘Forgiveness is a beautiful word, until you have to forgive someone yourself’

This parable is so important in today’s world of unforgiveness and revenge.

We identify with Peter here; when he asks how often should we forgive before we fulfil our obligations.
The Rabbis’ of the day taught that they were to forgive 3 times, so Peter thought he was a big person suggesting 7 times.

Jesus said there is no limit; and told a parable to get everyone’s attention.

Brenton Honeychurch – Are we a servant of God like Mary?

When the Angel came to Mary and said she was going to be the mother of Jesus; conceived of the Holy Spirit, her response was of being troubled at what the angel had said.

Some people think we are called to a blind faith in Christ; but we are called to ‘come and reason with me’; Mary responds thoughtfully when the angel speaks; she is not naive to what is happening.

Mary was troubled and was pondering it all in her mind; and is trying to weigh it all up to understand it. She is showing that her faith is a whole of person response including her intellect. What is the difference between Zacharius response to the angel (who was struck dumb), and Mary’s response who still thought about these things who was open to the truth, and willing to submit to this truth even if it meant being uncomfortable.

There is the kind of doubt that comes from a closed mind, and the kind of doubt that comes from an open mind.

What sort of doubt do we have? Are we like Mary and wanting to be humble servants of God, even though we may not fully understand the circumstances?

We come to a place in David’s life where he’s battling sadness.
It’s like he’s wanting to throw in the towel.

David was desparing that one day Saul would catch up with him and kill him.

We need to slow down and not make decisions in anger. Force yourself into the precense
of God when you are angry; and slow down and wait for God to work. You might not
want to talk to God at that time.

If we trust in God, we will never be desolate for trusting in Him.

Robert Moore – Power over demons

The man was controlled by unclean spirit; the opposite of controlled by the Holy Spirit
Because the demons are attracted to darkness, he lived in the tombs. He also
had supernatural strength.

In many ways this describes the natural spiritual condition of us. Many people
think they can control their own lives; but without a personal relationship with
Jesus Christ as Saviour, man is not under control of God.

Jesus meets the demon posessed man,
Jesus had power to deliver the man and He did
The peoples response to Jesus deliverance

The transformed man’s response; was he wanted to be with Jesus all the time. Jesus said
go home and tell your friends on how the Lord has had mercy on you.

Answers in Genesis speaker, Bryan Osborne, shared the importance of the Genesis record and how it is the foundation to many truths.

There is only one race; the human race; with varying skin tones; with many cultures from the tower of Babel; and there are only ‘two races’ spiritually; those that are ‘racing towards God’ and light, and those that are racing away from God and into darkness.

Topics covered include Racism; Eugenics, and Darwin’s ideology, and quotes from Atheists who understand how important the Genesis account is; if Genesis is not true, then the fall did not happen; and there is no need for atonement of sin; and thus no need of a Redeemer.
